1North Karnataka Flood relief Initiative.-
Phase 1: Immediate nutrition and medical relief
We are indeed saddened by the overall devastation caused by floods in North Karnataka. Adding to the misery was a preceding drought, affecting economic conditions adversely. On the other hand we are happy to read mails of members (read of aviratha) offering help. Right from day one, we are contemplating methods of helping. At the same time we need to note that we are too small an organisation to involve in large scale rescue operations. Nevertheless we have formulated a small programme wherein affected population in a small village named Mudallapura, Koppal district will be beneficiaries
Programme objectives
· To provide adequate nutrition to affected people for a period of at least 3 weeks
· To provide simple bedding.
· To provide basic clothing and minimum cooking utensils to affected families
· To screen and treat diseases secondary to flood devastation in the village
· To detect epidemic if any and take appropriate measures
· To equip the nearest health facility with adequet medicines to handle an epidemic & sporadic diseases in the near future
· To train health workers including doctors to handle medical issues including epidemics
· To spread health awareness amongst the affected population
Modus operandi
· Field team: Aviratha has a team of volunteers based at close proximity to the village who are working with the above objectives. They are currently involved in mobilizing resources and material for distribution. They are in constant touch with Aviratha, Bangalore, providing first hand information about requirements
· Base team: Aviratha has a core team monitoring relief work by field team at the village. They are providing funds and material to the field team and coordinating with donors and other NGOs to mobilise resources.
· Medical team: Health workers in Aviratha and experts from partner NGO, Karnataka Medical Research Foundation are involved in providing health relief and surveillance for any epidemic.
Relief Package
Aviratha has designed a package consisting of food, bedding, utensils, clothing and medicines sufficing for a family of 3. The package can be extended for bigger families or divided amongst people, as per requirement. The distribution process by field team is in progress.The total cost of package is Rs. 1000. Package details are as follows;
NUTRITION - Rs 250
The package will contain 10 Kg of rice of medium quality to suffice for 21 days. Vegetables and other cereals are being mobilized by our field team to be provided along with rice.
BEDDING
3 warm roll beds and 2 single thick bedsheets is provided in the package to those in need
UTENSILS
3 cooking utensils of different sizes are provided. However number and type of utensils will be provided depending on requirement
MEDICAL RELIEF
Primary Care.
Aviratha and Karantaka Medical Research Foundation will organise a health camp at the village on the 16th of November 2009. All residents of the village and surrounding settlements will be screened and treated appropriately. All types of medicines will be dispensed free of cost. Preventive medicines with appropriate instructions will also be dispensed. The nearest health care facility will be supplied with adequate medicines to last for the next month.
Secondary and Tertiary Care
For thoes residents requiring higher medical care, Karantaka Medical Research Foundation will make arrangements with its partner hospitals in the district.
Epidemic Surveillance
An Expert research team from Karantaka Medical Research Foundation (KMRF) will investigate for any epidemic or identify possible epidemics in near future. Based on requirement, appropriate measures will be taken by KMRF and will be funded by Aviratha. Measures will be in terms of ;
- Health care awareness
- Modification of demographic factors influencing an epidemic like de clogging of drains, removal of carcases, etc.
- Community medical interventions to treat/prevent epidemics like DDT spraying, fogging, fumigation etc.
- Equipping medical facilities with medicines and training health care workers to handle an epidemic.
SPILL OVER
There is a fair chance of dividing the package or adding material to it. For example, a family may require only nutrition while are suffice with clothing and bedding or otherwise. In such a case material not utilized will be distributed to other families who require it.
Phase 2 survey
A team from Aviratha will survey the village and surrounding places to plan for phase 2 of rehabilitation on 16th November 2009. Phase 2 will be formulated with an objective of long term rehabilitation. Areas of interest are;
- Schools: infrastructure, student rehabilitation and nutrition
- Long term primary health care facility
- Adoption of orphan and/or disabled children
- Sanitation and drainage
- Self employment, stimulus of local economy.

We request you to kindly donate for rehabilitation of residents of North Karantaka under Phase 1 of our initiative.
All donations will be exempted from income tax in accordance with Sec 80 G of IT act, 1961.
